A rare 17th-century wooden jointer plane attributed to Thomas Joy, an early Massachusetts carpenter and builder. The long shaped hardwood body is fitted with an iron cutter, brass hardware, and underside wear plate, with “JOY” carved into the wood. An attached note references a 1640 contract between Thomas Joy and Robert Keayne for the construction of a barn in Essex County, Massachusetts, and cites James E. Small’s In Deetz: Forgotten Things, Anchor Press, 1977, page 11. Exhibits surface wear, scratches, oxidation, and patina consistent with age and use. Approx. length (in): 11.5.
