Rendered in softly blended tones of blue, gray, ochre, and burgundy, the intimate composition captures a quiet moment of religious study and intergenerational learning. Signed “Gussow” at the lower right and identified with the artist’s name and date on the reverse, the work is presented matted in a period wooden frame. Bernard Gussow (1881–1957) was a Russian-born American modernist painter known for his colorful landscapes, city scenes, portraits, and still lifes.
