Very rare and desirable pair of carved bufflehead decoys attributed by the original tag to James Van Brunt of Setauket, Long Island, New York, 1903–1978. The pair retains old working paint in the classic black, cream, and yellow bufflehead pattern, with glass eyes, carved bills, relief-carved bodies, and original underside ballast plates and hardware. Few carvers made bufflehead decoys due to their small size and limited popularity with market hunters, making surviving examples scarce today. Both decoys show honest surface wear, paint rubs, minor age checks, and expected handling marks, but present beautifully as a matched drake and hen-style pair with strong form, appealing folk-art character, and excellent Long Island provenance.
