A scarce and visually compelling set of six antique “Wilson’s Lantern Transformations” magic lantern slides, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and retailed by T.H. McAllister, Optician, New York. Each slide is housed in a finely crafted wooden mount with a circular viewing aperture, designed for use in early projection devices. These transformation slides are particularly desirable, featuring layered or mechanical imagery that changes when projected, creating a dramatic visual effect. The subject matter centers on religious scenes from the life and Passion of Christ, including the Crucifixion and entombment, rendered in richly detailed hand-colored imagery. One slide is labeled “The body of Christ laid in Tomb,” with additional maker’s marks and series identifiers visible along the edges. The condition is consistent with age, showing wear to the wooden mounts and some deterioration or loss to the internal images, which is typical for these early multimedia pieces. An excellent and rare grouping for collectors of early optical devices, pre-cinema history, or religious ephemera. Approx. dimensions (in): 4 x 7 x 0.5.
