A massive Japanese Meiji period bronze eagle sculpture, expertly cast and finely chased, depicting a powerful eagle with wings dramatically outstretched as it surveys from atop a rugged naturalistic rock formation. The sculpture displays exceptional attention to detail in the individually rendered feathers, talons, and expressive head, all enhanced by a rich dark patina. A remarkable example of Meiji-era metalwork, the piece is ingeniously constructed in four separate sections for ease of transport and assembly, with each wing detachable from the body and the eagle itself removable from the rocky base. Combining impressive scale, dynamic movement, and masterful craftsmanship, this monumental bronze serves as a striking display piece representative of the finest Japanese animalier sculpture of the late 19th century.
