Framed Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, depicting the famous Heian-period poet and musician Izumi Shikibu seated in richly patterned robes while holding a biwa, a traditional Japanese lute. This artwork is number 56 from the series Hyakunin Isshu Eshō (“Pictures of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets”), a visual interpretation of the celebrated classical poetry anthology Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. The composition includes an open illustrated book-form cartouche above the figure, elegant floral kimono decoration, and finely colored period-style details. Presented matted under glass in a black frame, with visible toning, age-related discoloration, mat staining, and minor wear consistent with age and framing. Not examined outside the frame. Approx. frame size (in): 20.75 x 15.75 x 0.5, Approx. painting size (in): 14.25 x 9.5.
