A 19th-century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni III, also known as Utagawa Kunisada, depicting the famous kabuki actors Nakamura Shikan IV and Sawamura Tanosuke III portraying top-ranking courtesans, or keisei, named Keisei Kikunoi and Keisei Utako. The actors are shown in elaborate theatrical costume with ornate patterned robes, expressive faces, and large hair ornaments, set against a vivid blue ground with inscription cartouches and publisher/series markings within the image. The print is presented matted and framed in a black frame, with an older paper backing and hanging wire visible on the reverse. Visible condition includes toning, fading, creasing, surface wear, and age-related discoloration, with additional wear to the mat and backing; not examined outside the frame. A desirable Edo-period kabuki actor print by one of the most prolific masters of the Utagawa school, appealing to collectors of Japanese prints, theatrical subjects, and ukiyo-e portraiture.
